John Joseph "Johnny" Morrissey ( born April 18, 1940 in Liverpool ) is a former English footballer. The winger was one of the few people who were under contract first at Liverpool and right after the local rivals Everton. For Everton, he won two British championships in 1963 and 1970.

Sports career

Morrissey was part of the youth department of FC Liverpool and shortly after his 17th birthday, he signed with the " Reds " the first professional contract. The winger acted first on the right side. There, however, his missions were rare, as Kevin Lewis was preferred. Shortly after the turn of the year he benefited from an injury to Roger Hunt, which meant that Left Wing Alan A'Court its position in the center and the resulting Morrissey took over vacant position left. With the emerging Ian Callaghan, however, it quickly grew more competition and then the Board of Directors decided to Morrissey for sale in 1962 at local rivals Everton for £ 10,000. That this was done without the knowledge of coach Bill Shankly, made for loud cacophony Shankly and openly threatened to resign if such a procedure should be repeated.

The fact that Morrissey was the rival without long acclimation periods in the team, Shankly identified concerns quickly. Highlights in 1962/ 63, which ultimately ended with the winning the English Championship, were his goal on September 22, 1962 2-2 draw in the Merseyside derby against former club and the hat-trick against West Bromwich Albion (4: 2) one week later. At the end of the season he had contributed seven goals in 28 league games. He had so but not earned and so he found himself towards the middle of the 1960s, fierce competition in the person of Derek Temple exposed to an undisputed starting place. This led, among other things, that he 1966 only a marginal role played on the way to winning the FA Cup in the early rounds and in the final against Sheffield Wednesday ( 3-2 ) did not play. From the season 1966/67, was " Mogsy " as Morrissey was called by Everton supporters, but again more prominently in the first team. This benefited him that he possessed as a winger not only a good control of the ball and both feet, but in addition to the offensive qualities exceptionally robust occurred - thus he had also earned the recognition of proven " Roughnecks " Liverpool's Tommy Smith. Then there was his speed, which he particularly played out in the first meters during a commencement.

In the 1967/68 season Morrissey reached with Everton once again an FA Cup final and in this case he had with his 1-0 winning goal from the penalty spot against Leeds United in the semi-final decisive role in the success. However, the final was disappointing against West Bromwich Albion and resulted in a 0-1 defeat. The best year he finally graduated in the season 1969/70, as Morrissey scored nine goals in 41 league games on the way to his second British championship. He had a good performance especially at the start in August 1969 against the reigning champions Leeds and made available to the opposing right-back Paul Reaney major problems. The subsequent season 1970/71 was less than satisfactory. Nevertheless, he went on counting initially continued to ordinary players before it again fell into the severe 1971/72 season to defend his position. In May 1972, Morrissey left the club in the direction of third division club Oldham Athletic.

In Oldham, however, Morrissey spent only a year before he ended his career due to injury. His son of the same came later also in the professional team of FC Everton before, denied there but only two competitive games and found only at the Tranmere Rovers his luck.
