UNAIDS ( Joint United Nations Programme on HIV / AIDS; German: Joint United Nations Programme on HIV / AIDS) is coordinating a project of the United Nations with the aim of the various HIV / AIDS pandemic activities of individual countries in the fight against AIDS.

It was created in 1996 from the Global Program on HIV / AIDS of the World Health Organization. The headquarters of the organization is located in Geneva, Switzerland. Michel Sidibé 's successor was appointed on 1 December 2008, who comes from Mali and has worked before joining UNAIDS for 14 years with the United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF.

HIV / AIDS can not be fought alone in the medical sector, as it touches on many aspects of human society because of the way the transmission and spread of the epidemic. In the early years of the AIDS spread had the specialized agencies of the UN and the states each have their own programs, of which only very few were pooled in order to increase their effectiveness. In order to coordinate the activities of these programs better, UNAIDS was established.

An important function of UNAIDS is the collection of data and the attendant consequences of the epidemic is to capture the social ( living conditions of those infected ) and to document the impact of the epidemic on the economy of the states.

UNAIDS supported the World AIDS Conference and published twice a year, the Global HIV / AIDS Report.
