Jón Óskar

Jón Óskar, actually Jón Óskar Ásmundsson ( born July 18, 1921 in Akranes, Iceland, † October 20, 1998 in Reykjavík, Iceland ) was an Icelandic poet, author, musician and translator.

Life

Jón Óskar grew up in his native city before he made ​​his Abitur at the Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík. From 1940 he studied at the Music School Reykjavík piano and learned at the Alliance française in Reykjavík and in Paris the French language. In Rome, Perugia and Genoa, he learned the Italian language.

In the years 1946-1956 Óskar earned his livelihood by teaching music in Reykjavík, worked simultaneously from 1953 to 1958 for the Icelandic parliament, the Althing and the publishing house Birtings. In 1952 he published his first book entitled Wed andlit above þitt, followed by short stories, poetry volumes and a multi-volume biography.

The author is numbered among the five most important Icelandic poets who began writing in the 1940s and 1950s and were named as group "Atomic poet ".

Jón Óskar was since 1946 the translator of a number of Italian and French authors in the Icelandic language.
