Jonas Kubilius

Jonas Kubilius ( born July 27, 1921 in Fermo, District Tauragė now Rajongemeinde Jurbarkas, Lithuania, † 30 October 2011) was a Lithuanian mathematician who worked on probability theory and number theory.

Life

Kubilius studied 1940-1946 at Vilnius University and received his doctorate in 1951, Yuri Linnik at the Leningrad State University ( geometry of prime numbers ). After that, he was a lecturer in Vilnius. In 1957 he was habilitated at the Steklov Institute in Moscow (Russian doctorate ) and in 1958 was professor and rector of the University in Vilnius. Rector he remained until 1991, but even then he continued to teach as a professor.

During his time as Rector he could, supported by its international reputation, promote the use of the Lithuanian language at the university and to counteract " Russification " tendencies. Since 1952 he was also at the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and briefly also director of the newly established Mathematics Department in 1956, before he took up his position as Rector of the University. In his last years he was a senior scientist at the Institute of Mathematics and computer science, which formerly belonged to the Academy, but is independent today.

Kubilius mainly dealt with probabilistic number theory (statistical theory of arithmetic functions), where inequality is named after him and Paul Turán. Since 1962 he was a member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. He was president of the Lithuanian Mathematical Society. 1992 to 1996 he was a member of the Lithuanian Parliament. The Universities of Greifswald, Prague, Salzburg and the University of Latvia awarded Kubilius honorary doctorates. He was of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas.

Jonas Kubilius died on 30 October 2011 and was buried at the Vilnius Antakalnis Cemetery.
