Jonas Wenström

Jonas Wenström ( born October 4, 1855 in Hällefors, † December 21, 1893 in Västerås) was a Swedish power engineer and one of the pioneers of the Swedish electrical engineering. He received in 1890 a patent of his country on the three-phase AC

His father, Wilhelm Wenström (1822-1901) was a technician and responsible for a successful engineering company. Jonas Wenström studied at the universities of Uppsala and Oslo. After extensive humanistic and scientific studies and after many trips to Europe and the U.S., he worked among others on dynamos and electric Eisenerzseparatoren.

His brother Göran (Georg ) Wenström (June 4, 1857 - February 25, 1927 ) was founded in 1889 the company Wenströms & Granströms Elektriska Kraftbolag. In 1890 it merged with Ludwig Fredholm Elektriska Aktiebolaget Svenska Allmänna to Elektriska Aktiebolaget ( ASEA ) in Västerås.

Wenström is regarded as one of several independent inventors of the three-phase motor which he developed in 1890 introduced .. So he had the three-phase system, the generator, transformer and motor included with his colleague Ernst Danielson. Whether Wenström knew who appeared before his works Publications of the other pioneers such as Mikhail Ossipowitsch Doliwo - Dobrowolski, Charles Schenk Bradley or Friedrich August Haselwander is unknown. Is secured in retrospect that Wenström his works published after about one to two years and presented.

Among the first orders was 1893, the three-phase transmission between the hydropower plant Hellsjön and the Grubenort Grängesberg in Bergslagen / Dalarna, a distance of 12 km. The voltage on the overhead line was 9.5 kV and the system was designed to transfer a maximum power of 75 kW.
