Jonathan Bailey

Jonathan Bailey KCVO ( born February 24, 1940 in Liverpool; † 9 December 2008) was a British Anglican theologian and Bishop of Derby

Jonathan Bailey studied at Trinity College, University of Cambridge and Ridley Hall College, Cambridge. His first position as a priest, he entered in 1965 in St Helens. From there he moved into the management of a youth training center and in 1976 accepted a pastorate in Wetherby. In 1982 he was appointed Archdeacon of Southend - a position which he held for ten years. He was then suffragan bishop of Dunwich. After only three years in this post he was recalled from Suffolk and appointed Bishop of Derby in 1995. As Bishop of Derby from 1997 he was a member of the House of Lords. 2005 Jonathan Bailey retired.

Besides his work as a priest Jonathan Bailey has also held various positions in the administration of the Church. But his herausragendenste position beside his episcopate was that of the Clerk of the Closet. This is a historical function, the holder of the office is a personal counselor of the monarch in theological and ecclesiastical questions. For his work as Clerk of the Closet the Royal Victorian Order gave Elizabeth II Jonathan Bailey 2005.
