Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is the first novel by British author Susanna Clarke from the year 2004.

The book is set in England in the 19th century, during the Napoleonic Wars. The story is about the return of magic to England and the turbulent relationship of two fictional wizard. The author takes on historical figures and events in their alternate reality. These historical celebrities include Arthur Wellesley, Lord Byron and George III.

A special feature of this book is its many footnotes, reporting on events, books, scholars and biographies related to the magic.

The book won the 2005 Best Hugo Award and the World Fantasy Award in the novel, and the Locus Award for Best First Novel.

Film

On 15 October 2004 was New Line Cinema announced that the rights to the book Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell were acquired.
