Jonathan Williams (racing driver)

Jonathan James Williams ( born October 26, 1942 in Cairo, Egypt) is a former British racing driver.

The Englishman Williams, born in Egypt, lived in the 1960s in Italy and began to race there. The talented young driver drove in 1967 in the Formula 3 for the Scantis team that struck more by poor organization and futuristic chassis than successes. Nevertheless, Williams was in 1967 twice the chance to go for the Scuderia Ferrari factory rider at the start. In addition to a race in the Formula 2 European Championship he also drove a Formula 1 Grand Prix for the Italians. At the Grand Prix of Mexico, Williams was as a replacement for the injured Mike Parkes at the start, it was enough in the Ferrari 312F1 but only for the eighth.

Williams, who played some sports cars and CanAm race for the Scuderia to a permanent contract at Ferrari hoped for. This hope was not fulfilled, however, a Formula 1 project Abarth also did not materialize.

Williams, who was in 1965 and 1966 one of the best drivers in Formula 3, switched to Formula 2 and won in 1968 for Frank Williams Racing Cars at the Monza Lotteria. It was the first victory for the young racing team of Frank Williams. In the early 1970s, he drove the factory Serenissima in the sports car world championship and went into this series for privateers on a variety of vehicles at the start. After the end of his career Williams was trained as a commercial pilot for commercial aircraft, and practiced this profession from many years.
