The first ascent was made on June 3, 1930 by the German Hermann Hörlin and the Austrian Erwin Schneider, the participants in an expedition with Frank Smythe, Ulrich Wieland, Marcel Kurz, Tsering Norbu, Lewa and GO Dyhrenfurth were. These other climbers reached the summit on June 8. The actual goal of the climbers was the first ascent of only about 20 kilometers away Kangchenjunga, this was abandoned and instead three lower mountain first climbed, including the Ri Jong Sang

At the time of ascension, it was the highest peak, could ever be climbed. An altitude record, it was not there already several times before a height of more than 8000 m could be achieved ( without reaching the summit ). The record lasted until the first ascent of Kamet on 21 June 1931.
