Jonny King

John " Johnny " King (born 1965 in New York City ) is an American jazz pianist, author and lawyer.

Jonny King began at the age of nine years to play the piano and started early under the influence of the music of Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson, became interested in jazz. As a teenager, he had some performances in New York clubs. In the early 1980s he studied with Tony Aless and Mulgrew Miller and had just the opportunity to play with Art Blakey. After that, David worked with musicians from the Cooperative The Young Lions, went with his college friend Joshua Redman on tour and played with the band Out of the Blue, and, inter alia, with Christian McBride, Bobby Watson, Kenny Garrett, Vincent Herring, Roy Hargrove and Joe Lovano. Jonny King worked as a composer, and took with Vincent Herring, Billy Drummond, Joshua Redman, Steve Wilson, Peter Washington, Larry Grenadier and David Sánchez three albums under his own name for the label Criss Cross (1994) and Enja (1995 /97) on.

In addition to his musical career King graduated from Princeton and Harvard Law School and has since worked as a lawyer for copyright rights. He also worked as a writer and wrote the book What Jazz Is, which deals with the New York jazz scene around 1997 and especially the Young Lions.
