Jonte River

In the Gorges de la Jonte

The Jonte is a river in southern France, which runs into the regions of Languedoc -Roussillon and Midi -Pyrenees. It rises in the Cévennes National Park, on the northwest flank of Mont Aigoual ( 1567 m), in the municipality of Gatuzières, drained generally in a westerly direction and ends after 39 kilometers at the boundary of the municipality of Le Rozier and Peyreleau as a left tributary of the Tarn. On his way, the Jonte crosses the Lozere department and forms in their lower reaches the border of the Aveyron. Here they separated by about 500 meters deep Jonteschlucht (French Gorges de la Jonte ) geologically the northern Causse Méjean of the southern Causse Noir.
