Le Rozier

Le Rozier is a commune of 151 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Lozere department in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. It belongs to Canton Meyrueis and Local Government Association Vallée de la Jonte.

Geography

Le Rozier is located in the National Park of the Cevennes between the Causse Noir (Black plateau ) and the Causse Méjean (mean plateau ) in the valley of the Tarn at the confluence of Jonte in the Tarn, below the Gorges du Tarn ( Tarn Gorge ) and the Gorges de la Jonte ( Jonteschlucht ), 84 kilometers north- west of Montpellier, 15 km north-east of Millau and 14.2 kilometers north- west of the cantonal capital of Meyrueis, between the neighboring communities in the south and Peyreleau Mostuéjouls in the northwest.

Attractions

The Prioreikirche Saint -Sauveur was built in the 11th and 12th centuries. It was in 1960 entered in the Register of Monuments historiques additional (historical monuments ) ( inscrit MH). The church belonged to an old priory of Saint- Sauveur (also called Entraygues ). This priory was founded in 1075 the monastery of Saint- Benoît Aniane (Hérault ) was assumed. During the Wars of Religion (1562-1598) parts of the church were destroyed. In the 17th century the church was restored.

In 1927 a 4.5 -meter-high monument to the cavers Édouard Alfred Martel ( 1859-1938 ) and Louis Armand was erected.

Personalities

  • Louis Armand ( born August 23, 1854 in Saint- Affrique; † January 22, 1922 in Le Rozier ) was a blacksmith in Le Rozier, before he was cavers. He discovered the Aven Armand at Hures -la- Parade on the Causse Méjean.
