Joods Historisch Museum

The Jewish Historical Museum ( German: Jewish Historical Museum ) is a museum in Amsterdam on the history of Judaism in Amsterdam.

History

The museum is located since May 3, 1987 in the former Great Synagogue near Waterlooplein and the Weesperstraat, because the building of the German synagogues were no longer used for their religious purpose. Before that it was in the medieval De Waag building housed (City Wage on the Nieuwmarkt at Saint Anthony ). This precursor institution before the Second World War was called Stichting Jewish Historical Museum. It was opened on 24 February 1932. Under the German occupation it was closed down and robbed of a large part of the collection. A portion of it could be recycled. After its reopening in 1955, the persecution and murder of Jewish Dutch and the German and Austrian Jews who fled here was an important aspect of museum work.
