Joost van den Vondel

Joost van den Vondel (* November 17, 1587 in Cologne, † February 5, 1679 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch poet and playwright. He is considered next Gerbrand Bredero and Pieter A. Corneliszoon Hooft as the most important poet of the Golden Age of the Netherlands.

Life

The second of seven children on November 17, 1587 in Cologne, born in the Great Witschgasse. His parents were Joost van Vondelsenior and Sara Cranen. Both parents came from Antwerp. However, they fled from there due to the Counter-Reformation in Cologne, since his parents were members of the Mennonite faith. In Cologne 3 of the 7 children were born: his older sister Clementia 1586, the following year, Joost and 1594 Sister Sara. 1596 the family moved to Amsterdam.

Vondel earned his living with a stocking exchange business, which he had inherited from his father. After his son had so filed bankruptcy in 1656, he was supported until his retirement in 1668 from the Bank of Lening. He was also a member of the Brabant speech chamber ( Dutch: Rederijkerskamer ) "Het Wit Lavender". Even as he worked as a stocking-weaver, he began as an admirer of the Roman poet Seneca to write, even dramas.

Among his friends and role models counted Gerhard Johannes Vossius ( 1577-1649 ). Crispin de Passe the Elder published in 1618 in Amsterdam his Thronus Cupidinis among others with verses of Vondel.

For Vondel's important works are his stage plays Gijsbrecht van Aemstel and Lucifer.
