Jörg A. Eggers ( born June 15, 1936 in Heidelberg) is an Austrian film director, screenwriter and film producer.

Life and work

Eggers studied acting and directing at the Conservatory in Wiesbaden, further theater arts, psychology and philosophy at the University of Vienna, where he received his doctorate in 1964. In 1958 he was hired as an actor and assistant director at various theaters including the cabaret Time Reported in Frankfurt am Main, then on Park Ring Theater and Center Theater, the Theater of Youth in Vienna, Viennese comedy, theater at the Naschmarkt and the Burgtheater in the Salzburg Festival, as well as the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation. In 1961, he joined as a director from radio to television, where he not only music and entertainment programs staged several TV movies until 1971. He led the subsequent three years there, the department television film, documentaries and theater. In 1969, he staged at the Theater in der Josefstadt.

With The Case Regine Krause, a semi-documentary reconstruction of a criminal case from 1920 Eggers realized in 1970 his first long television movie. His first feature film was in 1971, the last Werkelmann, a sociogram of Vienna from 1914, worked on the fate of a hurdy-gurdy man, which was awarded the Television Award of the Austrian Adult Education in 1972.

For his movie Get out your air balloon ( 1985, working title: "Up and down") Jörg A. Eggers chose the pseudonym Arni Liebenberg. ( Is addressed those legendary mayor of Vienna, located in the plague year of 1679 and during the Turkish siege of 1683 began devotedly for his fellow citizens ) With this, inscrutable only for the skilled Vienna - Kenner homage, " betrays " a native of Germany, since 1959 in Vienna -based artist 's self -image as a Viennese writer and director.

" ... Eggers writes today, as in this country no other, useful, laconic, sure every theatrical gesture failing dialogues, white to occupy a movie properly. He obviously has the ability to his actors that have in Austria forced through far more stage for movie experience, successfully expel the theater and teach the feeling for the other medium ... I want to live in is all in all, not only the best movie which has long been produced in this country, but also the ' most commercial ' ... this film is provided he comes to the movies, there not only survive, but also provoke new Austrian film life. "So the critic Franz Manola wrote about Eggers ' " nuanced described confrontation a civil relationship between two people with the disability problem."

The social commitment that determines the themes of his television documentaries, has already shown himself during his student days, when he created in his spare time, oil paintings, founded by the Burgtheater actress Hilde Wagener charity artist help Artists to charity made available. Herbert Hauk, a board member of this organization and Director of Youth and Family in the ORF, was aware of Eggers. With the introduction of the Austrian educational television dedicated Herbert Hauk Eggers, in collaboration with Helmut Zilk was then responsible for the design didactically excellent programs. Eggers developed in the pioneering years of the ORF 60 TV formats. Educational television, guidance and contributions to the humanization of society are at the heart of Eggers ' television broadcasting activities. Deepen Socially relevant topics in fifty-minute documentary and embedding it in ninety-minute fictional entertainment films succeeded Eggers especially with the documentary We must do all that is possible to the best of its knowledge and belief (A 1975 National Education Price 1976), and with his uncovering the causes of youth crime in There is no need for psychoanalysis to determine that the life of a single graveyard of failed plans (A 1976). With We must do all that is possible to the best of its knowledge and belief Eggers broke the taboo not to bring disabled people into the screen. The Austrian television audience reacted very hostile.

With crime documentary feature films such as Convicted 1910 - Max Winter fights for Lieutenant Hofrichter (A / D 1974), Eggers showed his talent, historical detail to put spirit in the scene. His debut as a movie director, The Last Werkelmann of 1971, was dominated by the Vienna - connectedness. On the fate of a typical Viennese hurdy-gurdy man Eggers drew a sociogram of Vienna of 1914; for oriented at Odon von Horvath dialect - art language and for the atmospheric production, the work was awarded after his TV appearance with the National Education Prize 1972. The director's concept, the attempt to implement the goals of the Kassel Documenta in the film, was a response to the dying entertainment film of the 1950s and 60erJahre. Resolution of the dream factory, radical approach to reality, away from the airbrushed images, no built decorations, no illuminated faces, no painted masks, no synchronization, no musical accompaniments. Only original sound, only O- music, only original locations. The last Werkelmann was the prelude to a series of socially critical films on Austrian television. The concept of " documenta " at the Austrian Film differed little from the concept of " dogma " that 24 years later in 1995 postulated Lars von Trier in Denmark.

In 1975, Eggers from the ORF - association in the free producers existence and founded the Cine Mercury film television production Ges.mbH with which he respect its international success I want to live produced ( 5th place in the pre-selection for nomination for the foreign Oscar 1977). The main roles were played by Kathina Kaiser and Heinz Bennents. In 1979 he founded the Saturn Film GmbH in Munich. In December 2012, they moved to Berlin, where Eggers handed over the management and the company's shares to Philipp Meuser.
