Jorge de Paiva

Jorge de Paiva ( born April 12, 1887 in Cacilhas, † May 12, 1937 ) was a Portuguese fencer.

Career

Paiva began in 1910 with the fencing and initially chose the sword as a weapon. About his Fencing Master Carlos Gonçalves he was following a group of fencers, which won a number of national and international titles. He was 1920-1928 three -time member of the Portuguese foil team at the Olympic Games. In Antwerp in 1920 and Paris in 1924, the team finished fourth, respectively. The biggest success was winning the bronze medal in the foil - Mannschaftswetbewerb at the Summer Olympic Games in Amsterdam together with Mário de Noronha, Paulo d' Eca Leal, Frederico Paredes, João Henrique da Silveira and Sasseti.

In his hometown Cacilhas the praceta Jorge de Paiva was named after him.
