José Eulalio Samayoa

José Eulalio Samayoa (* December 1780 in Guatemala City; † uncertainly, 1866) was a Guatemalan composer.

Life

José Eulalio Samayoa was born in December 1780 in Guatemala City. As an apprentice, he learned the trade of a church musician, both instrumental ( cello ) and vocal ( only boy soprano, then tenor). The singer Manuel Mendilla Retalhuleu, member of the Church Chapel of the Cathedral under Rafael Antonio Castellanos, instruction gave him in composing and encouraged the boy's first pieces, both two-part dance Pieces in Folk Style ( Sones ) for violin and bass, as well as shorter songs and pieces for the church use. In his youth took Samayoa studies of the liturgy and theology at the same time as he learned the Catholic church music. On 2 July 1813, he founded the Philharmonic Society of Guatemala, which was dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This was a Philharmonic of the first companies in the New World. He also led to different time periods and for modern historians extremely important diary in which he not only personal records, such as his marriages and the like. , but also the daily events of his time (independence uprisings, wars and the respective political situations ) reported.

As a composer, he outgrew the Spanish baroque and pre-classical traditions, and was encouraged to an increasing extent of the symphonies of Joseph Haydn, from whom he had several and the study of which introduced him to the art of symphonic composing. Thus he became one of the first in the New World Symphony. Among his writings are his historical reflections on the music of Guatemala are of great interest.
