José Luis Ramírez

José Luis Ramírez ( born March 12, 1958 in Huatabampo ) is a former Mexican boxer.

Professional career

Southpaw Ramírez started in 1973 at featherweight and boxed until 1980 exclusively in his home country. In April 1978, he lost in his 45th professional fight against the aging superstar Rubén Olivares by TKO in the second round.

Almost all of his famous battles took place in lightweight. In 1980, he narrowly lost against Alexis Argüello and was his opponent, who was considered above average taker, after all, it hit the ground. The following year he defeated the Americans Ray Mancini.

He received his first title shot on May 1, 1983, when he punched in Puerto Rico against the hard-hitting local hero Edwin Rosario for the vacant WBC title and lost on points.

But the rematch in November 1984 he won a sensational technical knockout in round four. He was in this fight on the ground, but was overall a world-class taker. This victory is pretty much his only undisputed success against a world-class boxer. He lost the WBC crown in 1985 to Hector Camacho, another Puerto Rican and southpaw.

In 1986 he boxed mainly in France. He won back the now vacant WBC title in July 1987 against Terrence Alli and defended him against Cornelius Boza -Edwards.

In 1988 it came to the infamous fight of his career when he went from undefeated Olympic champion Pernell Whitaker ( also southpaw ) in France clearly dominated, but was told by a scandal decision the winner. Lou Duva of Main Events Whitakers promotional company said in allusion to this judgment and Whitaker later (official ) draw against another Mexican Julio César Chávez, Whitaker won all fights except against Jose Sulaiman (President of the WBC).

The next Ramírez denied a unification fight against WBA titleholder Chávez, whom he lost on points. In the following rematch against Whitaker in the U.S., he was inferior.

In March 1990 he got against Argentine Juan Coggi one last title fight he could not use also, so that he then ended his career.
