José-Maria de Heredia

José -Maria de Heredia, originally José María de Heredia Girard ( born November 22, 1842 in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba; † 2 October 1905 Bourdonné, Yvelines ) was a French writer of Spanish origin.

Heredia was the son of Domingo de Heredia, who came from a long-established Spanish family in Cuba and his second wife Louise F. Girard, a French woman from Saint- Domingue. With 17 years Heredia came to Paris in 1859 and began studying at the École Nationale des Chartes. Beginning in 1901, he then worked as a librarian at the Bibliothèque de l' Arsenal.

1867 married Louise Heredia Despaigne and had with her three daughters: Hélène, the future wife of Maurice Maidron entomologists and the literary historian René Doumic. The second daughter, Marie, who published as a writer under the pseudonym of Gérard d' Houville and the wife of Henri de Régnier was Symbolists and the third, Louise, the future wife of the writer Pierre Louÿs.

Heredia was naturalized in 1893 and he was awarded French citizenship. And with effect from February 22, 1894 took the Académie française Heredia as a member on ( armchair 4). He thus became the successor of Charles de Mazade. 1906, a year after the death of Heredia, the novelist Maurice Barres was his successor.
