José Maria Pires

José Maria Pires ( born March 15, 1919 in Córregos, Brazil) is Archbishop Emeritus of Paraíba.

Life

José Maria Pires was ordained priest on 20 December 1941.

He was on 25 May 1957 by Pope Pius XII. appointed bishop of Araçuaí. The Archbishop of Diamantina, Newton José de Almeida Baptista, consecrated him on 22 September of the same year to the bishop; Co-consecrators were José André Coimbra, Bishop of Patos de Minas, and João de Souza Lima, Bishop of Nazaré. On 2 December 1965 he became Pope Paul VI. appointed Archbishop of the Diocese of Paraíba. Pires was a member of the Central Commission of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference.

On 29 November 1995, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation age-related.
