José Toribio Medina

José Toribio Medina Zavala ( born October 21, 1852 in Santiago de Chile, † December 11, 1930 ibid ) was the most important Chilean bibliographer and an avid historian.

Life and work

Jose Medina, who was born on October 21, 1852 in Santiago de Chile, was the son of José del Pilar Medina y Valderrama ( attorney and judge) and Mariana Zavala Almeida. He lived in his childhood in Santiago, Talca and Valparaíso, studied law at the Universidad de Chile in Santiago in 1873 where he was awarded the title of lawyer. In 1875, he came as a diplomat to Peru. In Lima, the capital of the colonial viceroyalty of Peru was from 1542 to 1818, which includes today's Chile was, awakened the numerous archives of the colonial period his interest. He started the first time so that historical books and documents trace of which he made copies. From another five trips to various countries he brought with extensive material to Chile, which he published at his own print shop. He created in the Spanish archives alone, 17,799 copied pages and lists. In 1925 he left his comprehensive and significant for the study of Chilean history work of the National Library, which was dedicated to him his own room. He died on 11 December 1930.
