The Universidad de Chile ( German: University of Chile ), based in Santiago de Chile is the largest university in Chile and one of the oldest in America.

History

The roots of the University date back to 1622, when the first university was founded in Chile under the name of Santo Tomás de Aquino on August 19. On 28 July 1738 was renamed in honor of King Philip V of Spain in Real Universidad de San Felipe. In the vernacular, it is also known as Casa de Bello (Spanish: Bellos house - after their first Rector, Andrés Bello ) known.

On April 17, 1839, when Chile had become independent of the mother country, the Kingdom of Spain, the University was officially to the Universidad de Chile, and opened on September 17, 1843 During this time, five faculties were established.:

  • Anthropology and Philosophy
  • Mathematical Sciences and Physics
  • Law and Political Science
  • Medicine
  • Theology.

1931 were from six faculties:

  • Philosophy and education
  • Law and Social Sciences
  • Biology and Medicine,
  • Physics and Mathematical Sciences
  • Agricultural Economics and Veterinary Medicine
  • Arts.

Later, even the Faculties

  • Economics
  • Architecture
  • Dentistry
  • Chemistry and Pharmacy

Added, and the following institutions:

  • Institute of Public Affairs
  • Institute of International Studies
  • Institute for Communication and Image
  • Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology

The Universidad de Chile operates numerous projects nationwide, such as:

  • The national sky observatory since 1852
  • Research activities in Antarctica since 1940
  • Seismological investigations, in particular volcanic activity since 1908
  • Chile's Symphony Orchestra since 1941
  • Chile's National Ballet since 1945
  • Centre for Byzantine, neohellenische, Arabic and Judaic Studies
  • Chile NIC.
