Joseba Sarrionandia

Joseba Sarrionandia Uribelarrea ( born April 13, 1958 in Iurreta (Bizkaia ), near Bilbao ) is a Spanish or Basque writer and translator.

Life

He graduated in Basque Philology at the University of Deusto in Bilbao and was a Lecturer in Phonetics at the branch office of the Spanish Open University of UNED in Bergara.

In 1977 he founded, together with the writer Bernardo Atxaga and musician Ruper Ordorika the avant-garde magazine POTT, which contributed significantly to the development of modern Basque literature. Around the same time Sarrionandia stepped out of outrage over the political continuity after the end of Franco's dictatorship, the separatist group ETA in. In 1980 he was arrested, tortured and sentenced to a long prison sentence for several bank robberies. Five years later, he succeeded in a spectacular way to escape. Together with a fellow prisoner, he was smuggled to a concert in a speaker from prison. This flight inspired the famous song Sarri, Sarri the ska band Kortatu.

Sarrionandia translated works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Constantine Cavafy, TS Eliot and Fernando Pessoa.
