Josef Bayer

Josef Bayer ( born March 6, 1852 in Vienna, † March 12 1913 in Vienna) was an Austrian composer.

Life

Josef Bayer studied at the Vienna Conservatory with Josef Hellmesberger senior, Otto Dessoff and Anton Bruckner. From 1870 he was for 28 years a violinist in the orchestra of the Vienna Court Opera. When Josef Bayer was Hofopernkapellmeister 1883 and from 1885 took over the management of the Hofopernballets, began his musical career. During this time he composed over 20 one-act ballets, several operettas, dance scenes and numerous other musical works. His first big success was premiered in January 1885 ballet " Viennese Waltz ", which traces the development of the German national dance in the previous century using melodies Johann Strauss, Josef Lanner and many others. The Office as Head of Hofopernballets he held until his death on March 12, 1913. His grave site is located in Vienna's Central Cemetery (Group 0, number 1, number 66).

" The Fairy Doll "

The largest ballet creation that was ever created at the Vienna Court Opera and at the same time Bayer should be today 's most famous work is the on October 4, 1888 for the first time produced ballet " The Doll Shop ". It was later named after the lead role, " The Fairy Doll " world famous under the title. The choreography is by Hofballettmeister Haßreiter Josef (1845-1940), the sets and the costumes by Franz Gaul ( 1837-1906 ). " The Fairy Doll " is still performed every year at the Vienna State Opera and is now over eight hundred performances of the most performed plays of the State Opera.

" Cinderella "

" Cinderella " is a work composed by Johann Strauss, large-scale ballet. However, he could not complete it because he died on June 3, 1899 of pneumonia. Until his death, Johann Strauss had orchestrated the first act and half of the third act. To complete the work, Josef Bayer fell under the contractual provision only the music of Johann Strauss ( " except for the technically necessary reconciliation" ) to use. Bayer completed the piano score of the ballet, but Gustav Mahler was of the view that the work had so nothing more to do with Johann Strauss and refused to perform it. So was on May 2, 1901, the premiere of " Cinderella " in the presence of Emperor Wilhelm II in the Royal Opera House in Berlin. It was not until seven years later, on October 4, 1908, the work was commissioned for the first time at the Vienna Court Opera.
