Josef Finger

Josef Finger ( born January 1, 1841 in Pilsen, † May 6, 1925 in St. Georgen im Attergau ) was an Austrian physicist and mathematician.

Life

Joseph Finger was born the son of a master baker in Pilsen. He attended high school in Pilsen and made on August 5, 1859 Award -leaving examination. In Prague he studied from 1859 to 1862 Mathematics and Physics at Charles University in Prague. For financial reasons, he acquired until 1865 the qualification to teach mathematics and physics at secondary schools and went into the teaching profession. On March 17, 1875 received his doctorate finger at the University of Vienna, 1876, he habilitated at the University of Vienna for the subject Analytical Mechanics, in 1888 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina. 1897 published fingers " over the inner virial an elastic body ." Finger was 1888-1890 Dean of the Chemical Technical School. 1890 to 1891 he was rector of the Technical University of Vienna. Inclusion in the Academy of Sciences was finger despite several attempts and support of Loschmidt Ernst Mach and later denied. 1916 received an honorary doctorate finger of Engineering Sciences. Finger is considered a pioneer of continuum mechanics.

In 1965 ( 10th district ) was named the street after him in Vienna fingers favorites.
