Josef Hermann Tautenhayn

Josef Tautenhayn, his first name formerly written Joseph ( born May 5, 1837 in Vienna, † April 1, 1911 ) was an Austrian sculptor and medalist.

Life

Josef Tautenhayn was an important representative of his profession. From 1862 he was Münzgraveur the State Mint, from 1874 head of the engraving academy and from 1881 to 1905 professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. His students included the Medalists Rudolf Marshall and Richard Placht.

He created numerous memorial and portrait medals and sculptural jewelry and handcrafts for buildings of the Ringstrasse. He has created works for the University of Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Imperial Council building.

For his service and the high quality of his work, he became the imperial Chamber of suppliers appointed.

In 1912 in Vienna, Rudolf -Fuenfhaus ( 15th district ) was named the Tautenhayngasse after him.

He was the father of the sculptor and medalist Josef Tautenhayn the Younger, the composer Karl Tautenhayn and actor Ernst Tautenhayn.
