Josef Meixner

Josef Meixner (* April 24, 1908 in Perca ( Starnberg ), † 19 March 1994 in Aachen ) was a German theoretical physicist.

Life

Meixner studied 1926-1931 mathematics and physics at the University of Munich, where he passed the state examination for Higher school subject in these subjects in April 1931 and was awarded his doctorate for wave mechanics in June 1931 by Arnold Sommerfeld in theoretical physics with a thesis. He then worked as a research assistant at the University of Munich and from 1934 as a research assistant at the Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of Giessen, where he qualified as a lecturer in 1936 and received a teaching assignment for Theoretical Physics. After several professorships, among others at the Technical University of Berlin, he was appointed as extraordinary professor of theoretical physics at the RWTH Aachen from the Reich Ministry for Science, Education, and Culture (SEM) in Berlin December 1, 1942. In 1948 he was appointed a full professor there, where he taught until his retirement in 1974 and conducted research.

Meixner is known today mainly for the named after him special functions of mathematical physics ( Meixner polynomials, Meixner - Pollaczek polynomials ) and for his work on Sphäroidfunktionen and Mathieu functions. It dealt among other things with thermodynamics of irreversible processes, where he published important work early in 1943. In the 1950s he was at the request of his teacher Sommerfeld with Fritz Bopp, the new editions of Sommerfeld's famous lectures on theoretical physics out.
