Josef Tošovský

Josef Tošovský ( born September 28, 1950 in Náchod ) is a Czech banker and politician.

Tošovský studied from 1968 to 1973 foreign trade at the University of Economics Prague, and then entered the service of the Czechoslovak State Bank. In 1977 he did an internship in the UK, in France in 1980. From 1984 to 1985 he worked in the London branch of the Zivnostenská banka, he was the deputy head in 1989. From 1976 to 1989 he was a member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia.

In December 1989 he was recalled to Prague and appointed President of the Czechoslovak State Bank. As of January 20 1993, he was governor of the Czech National Bank.

After the fall of the Klaus government on 30 October 1997 President Václav Havel commissioned him on 17 December 1997 with the formation of a government. From 2 January 1998 to 17 July 1998, he led a bipartisan government. On July 22, 1998, he again took over the management of the Czech National Bank.

On 30 November 2000 Tošovský resigned from this office and has since worked at the Financial Stability Institute (FSI ), a division of the Bank for International Settlements, based in Basel.

In 1994 he was elected to the European Manager of the Year, 1995 on the European Banker of the Year.
