Joseph Cafasso

Joseph Cafasso ( born January 15, 1811 in Castelnuovo d' Asti, † June 23, 1860 in Turin) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and social reformer. He was canonized in 1947.

Life

The son of a wealthy farmer went to the seminary in Chieri and received priestly ordination in 1833. He entered the ecclesiastical seminary Institute of St.. Francis, in order to deepen his knowledge of the theologian Luigi Guala. In 1836 he was a teacher himself for moral theology, and later Spiritual and 1846-1860 Rector in this seminary. His students included John Bosco, it - like many other Turin Salesian and diocesan priests - also chose the confessor. In 1848 he was also pastor of the parish connected with the seminary Saint François. He is considered a great admirer and imitator of Saint. Francis de Sales. He also very active in the pastoral care of prisoners in five prisons in Turin, where appropriate - is at 68 prisoners - right up to his execution, which earned him the nickname Boom priest.
