Joseph Caspar

Joseph Anton Johann Nepomuk Caspar ( born February 17, 1799 in Rorschach, Switzerland, † February 22, 1880 in Berlin) was a Swiss painter and engraver.

With 16 years Caspar went to Rome, there to by copying the old masters learning. With advice and recommendation of Wilhelm von Schadow Caspar in 1820 went to Berlin and settled there as a freelance artist.

Privy Councillor of Beuth Caspar advised to specialize in the art of engraving and promoted him doing well financially. Caspar could therefore be for about four years in Milan as a pupil of Giuseppe Longhi Pietro and Anderloni.

From 1826 Caspar lived back in Berlin, where he was soon appointed librarian of the Academy.
