Joseph F. Smith (Pennsylvania politician)

Joseph Francis Smith ( born January 24, 1920 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † May 14, 1999 ) was an American politician. Between 1981 and 1983 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Joseph Smith attended St. Anne's Parochial School and then the Northeast Catholic High School, both in his hometown of Philadelphia. Between 1940 and 1942, he graduated from the local Saint Joseph 's College. During the Second World War he served between 1942 and 1945 as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. After the war he worked as an accountant. Between 1965 and 1970 he was on the staff of Congressman James A. Byrne. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. From 1970 to 1981 he sat in the Senate of Pennsylvania.

Following the resignation of Mr Raymond F. Lederer Smith was at the due election for the third seat of Pennsylvania as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on 21 July 1981. Since he was not nominated by his party for re-election in 1982, he could only finish the current term in Congress until January 3, 1983.

Between 1983 and 1986, Joseph Smith was chairman of the Democratic Party in Philadelphia. He died on 14 May 1999.
