Joseph Fassbender

Joseph Fassbender ( born April 14, 1903 in Cologne, † January 5, 1974 ) was a German painter and graphic artist.

Life

Joseph Fassbender was a representative of abstract painting and belonged since the late 40s to the 60s of the 20th century 's most influential artists for the art scene of the Rhineland. Actually, he should take over the parental pastry, but studied in the 1920s painting by Richard Seewald at the Cologne factory schools.

In 1947, Fassbender at Castle Alfter near Bornheim together with the painters Hann Trier and Hubert Berke and other so-called " Thursday society" which it had set itself the task to revive the cultural life in the Rhineland after the end of Nazi oppression. He was represented as a participating artist at the documenta 1 in 1955, the documenta 2 in 1959 and the documenta III in Kassel in 1964.

Between 1956-1958 Joseph Fassbender was head of the graphic arts department of the Arts and Crafts School in Krefeld (today: Hochschule Niederrhein ). In 1958, Fassbender was appointed professor of painting and graphic art at the Dusseldorf Art Academy.

In addition to painting his graphic work and the poster and book designs and logo designs are considered remarkable.

Fassbender wife Anna founded the Joseph and Anna Fassbender Award, which is awarded as a scholarship to Graphikerinnen and graphic artist and hand over the town of Brühl since 1990.
