Joseph Franz von Jacquin

Franz Joseph Freiherr von Jacquin ( born February 7, 1766 Schemnitz (now Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia), † October 26, 1839 in Vienna) was an Austrian chemist and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " J.Jacq. ".

Life

From his father Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin it was introduced very early in the natural sciences. He studied medicine in Vienna, where he obtained his doctorate in 1788. Between 1788 and 1791 he undertook, commissioned by Emperor Joseph II, a research trip to Germany, France and England. He inherited - as it was then customary, - his father's chair as professor of botany and chemistry at the University of Vienna, where he remained from 1797 until his retirement in 1838. 1834 appointed him Emperor Franz overseeing the organization formed for the Austrian Emperor Flora Garden at the Belvedere Castle. In 1820 he was honored in 1838 with the title of the Government Council with the Knight's Cross of St. Stephan Order.

The Jacquin family was a friend of Mozart, who the Kegelstatt Trio ( K. 498 ) and the four-hand piano sonata KV 521, composed for Joseph Francis ' sister Franziska.
