Joseph Heintz the Elder

Joseph Heintz ( baptized on June 11, 1564 Basel, † October 15, 1609 in Prague) was a Swiss painter and architect.

Life

Heintz served an apprenticeship as a painter in Basel. Maybe Hans Bock was his teaching Lord. He later appeared on 1584-89 and 1587-88 in Rome, Venice. Emperor Rudolf II in Prague in 1591 made ​​him his court painter. Heintz lived from 1598 to 1609 both in Prague and in Augsburg. In Augsburg, he worked as an architect for the designs of the Baroque facade of the armory. He was raised to the peerage in 1602.

In Basel frescoes have been preserved at the house to dance from him. In Rome, he first worked as a copyist and changed gradually to the Mannerist. His paintings often contain mythological and allegorical, partly religious motives. Get some 50 paintings and about 100 drawings.

His son, Joseph Heintz the Younger (1600-1678), was also a painter who lived in Venice since at least 1625. From him especially Venetian vistas are preserved.
