Isherwood was born in 1870 in Hartlepool, the son of a greengrocer. After the school visit, he started at the age of 15 years teaching as a ship draftsman in the drawing department of the local shipyard Edward Withy & Co. After more than ten years at Withy he took in 1896 a position as a surveyor of ships in the classification society Lloyd 's Register of Shipping on. During this work, he developed the Isherwood system. The system provides a strong Längsspantensystem, which leads to an increased stiffness of the hull along the longitudinal axis. Thanks to the 1906 patent pending Isherwood system in the early 20th century were built, among other much larger tankers.

After he left in 1907 Lloyd's to join the board of the shipyard R. Craggs & Sons in Middlesbrough, he soon moved on to London, where he settled as a ship designer. After the first ship after the Isherwood system was built in August 1908, continued his idea through well.

On 23 June 1921 Joseph Isherwood was struck in recognition of his contributions to the development of a baronet ship. In 1933 he led another the Arcform, but the system continued as a result of its poorer swell and handling characteristics, as well as the less favorable of space connected to the much larger construction effort can not succeed. Sir Joseph Isherwood died in 1937 of pneumonia.
