Joseph Lagrange (soldier)

Joseph Lagrange ( born January 10, 1763 in Sempesserre; † January 16, 1836 in Paris) was a French general of division.

Life

Lagrange was a son of the citizen Armand Lagrange and his wife Marianne Baruit. Inspired by the ideals of the revolution was Lagrange 1791 Mayor of Lectoure. It was early on a partisan of Napoleon and joined him in 1796 on his Italian campaign to.

In some battles to Lagrange was distinguished by bravery and was rapidly promoted. At Napoleon's Egyptian expedition (1798/1801) he was able to participate in the rank of general. He was at the siege of al -Arish ( 8./19. February 1799 ) and Acre ( March / May 1799) involved and could in battles with the Pyramids (July 21, 1798) and Heliopolis (20 March 1800) distinguished by bravery.

On November 6, 1802, he married in Paris ( 1st arrondissement ) Marie de Talhouet ( 1786-1849 ) and had with her four daughters and a son.

General Lagrange in 1805 led an expeditionary army against the British in the West Indies (Santo Domingo ); Beginning of 1806 he was able to return to France again. He later became Minister of War in the Kingdom of Westphalia under King Jérôme Bonaparte.

Under command of Marshal Jean Lannes helped with Lagrange in 1808 to enforce Napoleonic interests in Spain.

With effect from June 11, 1832 Lagrange resigned all his offices and duties, and retired into private life. He settled in Paris ( 1st arrondissement ), where he died on January 16, 1836, six days after his 73rd birthday.
