Joseph-Marie Martin

Joseph -Marie -Eugène Cardinal Martin ( born August 9, 1891 in Orléans, † January 21, 1976 in Rouen ) was Archbishop of Rouen.

Life

He was born in Orléans Joseph -Marie Martin and was given the additional name of Eugène at his baptism. He studied at the Theological Seminary in Bordeaux before he served in the French army during the First World War, in which he was seriously injured. Martin was ordained priest on 18 December 1920 and was from then until 1940 in pastoral work of the Archdiocese of Bordeaux active. He was in the Jahrem 1937-1940 Vicar General of Bordeaux.

Pius XII. appointed him on 9 February 1940 Bishop of Le Puy -en -Velay. The Bishop of Bordeaux Maurice Feltin consecrated him on 2 April of the same year the bishop; Co-consecrators were Clément Mathieu Joseph, bishop of Aire and Dax and Louis Liagre, Bishop of La Rochelle. He administered the diocese of Le Puy -en -Velay to his appointment as Archbishop of Rouen on 11 October 1948. He participated in the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 in part.

Pope Paul VI. took him February 22, 1965 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Teresa al Corso d' Italia in the College of Cardinals to. Cardinal Martin believed that the reaction of conservative Catholics could lead to the introduction of the vernacular in the Mass to a schism. On May 29, 1968, Paul VI took. Martins reasons of age pre- mounted resignation and later he lost the right to participate in a conclave because he exceeded the age of 80 on 9 August 1971.

The cardinal died on January 21, 1976 at the age of 84 years, Rouen. He is buried in the Cathedral of Rouen.
