Joseph-Martin Cabirol

Joseph Martin Cabirol ( born March 29, 1799 in Narbonne, † December 15, 1874 in Paris) was a French rubber manufacturer and inventor of a helmet diving equipment and a dive light.

Life

Joseph Martin Cabirol was born in modest circumstances in Narbonne, learned the millinery and came to Paris as a young man. He worked as a rubber producer and received a patent in 1846 on the processing of gutta-percha. Among the manifold applications of this material were also protective suits made of rubberized canvas for non-breathable atmospheres. In 1855 he received a patent on a tube furnished helmet diving apparatus, which he called " Scaphandre ". The model is similar to previous models from August sieves. The helmet has a manually operated valve, removed the helmet diver exhaled air from the helmet. A securing device in the valve prevents ingress of water into the helmet. The fourth view port on the front of the helmet above, allows the diver to a limited upward visibility corresponds to a model of screen 1840. Earlier models had only three round viewing ports (front, left and right). At the World Exhibition in Paris in 1855, his diving equipment was excellent. The original diving suit of rubberized canvas and the helmet are in the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in Paris. From 1857 supplied Cabirol the Imperial French Navy with diving suits. After Cabirols death his nephew Charles Ferrus continued to manage the company.

The mausoleum Cabirol - Ferrus is located on the Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris and is listed as a Historic Monument ( Monument historique ). It is in the base Mérimée, a database of the French Ministry of Culture ( Ministère de la Culture ), conducted under the key PA00086780. The frieze is decorated with a goat's coat of arms ( Cabirol is the Occitan word for goat), flanked by helmet divers right and left.
