After graduating he worked from 1849 to 1850 assistant of Johann Baptist Chiari and then went to Gebärklinik for midwives, where he worked until 1854. After he had been taught at the Viennese Josephinum since 1855, he followed the call of the University of Vienna in 1861, where he took over the newly constructed second obstetric - gynecological clinic. He was also later dean and rector of the university. After he became blind in 1886 due to an already existing perennial eye trouble, he resigned the management of the clinic.

In 1953 ( 22nd District ) was named the street after him Späth in Vienna Danube city.
