Joseph Vilsmaier

Joseph Vilsmaier ( born January 24, 1939 in Munich) is a German film director and cinematographer. The name is stated in all the scene sequences, which he turned as a cameraman when Joseph Vilsmeier.

Life

He attended a boarding school near Augsburg, completed a technical training in film camera Manufacturer Arnold & Richter ( ARRI ), studied nine years at the Conservatory of Music in Munich with a focus on piano. Subsequently he was a member of a jazz band.

After he had been working for several years as a technician, he went in 1961, first as assistant material and camera assistant, then as a cameraman in the film industry, where he quickly made ​​a name for himself. Behind the camera, he worked among others in some episodes of the TV series on-axis (1977 ), a series of scene sequences as well as in the Hallervorden - strip Didi at full speed and Didi - with the expert.

With his directorial debut, the home movie Autumn Milk in which his wife Dana Vávrová played the lead role, Joseph Vilsmaier scored 1988 immediately secured a commercial success, which was surpassed by the Comedian Harmonists in 1997. Less enthusiastic, however, the reactions of film critics have failed to Vilsmaier directed services. Films by him are often referred to as " arts and crafts " or been criticized as historically reduced in perspective.

For many of his films, he has also served as Director of Photography.

With Dana Vávrová he was married from 1986 until her death in February 2009. They have three daughters: Janina Vilsmaier, Theresa Vilsmaier and Josefina Vilsmaier taken all the professional actress. During the filming of the last train, a film produced by Artur Brauner is Vilsmaier injuries, moved to Prague at the collapse of a camera tower and was limited in the following operational. Therefore Vávrová took over as director. Vilsmaier and Vávrová have been awarded for the last train at the Bavarian Film Prize 2006 with the Special Jury Prize.

On June 21, 2009 Vilsmaier received the honor Camera Award for his life's work. The jury justified this decision with Vilsmaier strong intuition for lighting moods and spaces and the emotional power of his images.
