Joseph Vivien

Joseph Vivien (* 1657 in Lyon, † December 5, 1734 in Bonn) was a French portrait artist, who emerged mainly through pastel painting.

Life

Born in Lyon, he was baptized on March 30, 1657. At 20 he was in Paris pupil of François Bonnemer ( 1638-1689 ) and Charles Le Brun. In 1698 he became a provisional member (French: agré ) at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in Paris, in 1701 and 1703 Member Conseiller.

Well through the mediation Agnes Le Louchiers he was in 1699 for the first time worked in Brussels for Elector Max Emanuel of Bavaria. In 1704 he was again in Brussels in 1706 and 1710 he had stays in Munich. From 1712 he lived in Paris and back again after 1716 in Munich. In the meantime, he worked for the Elector of Cologne, first for Max Emanuel's brother Joseph Clemens and 1721 in Münster for Clemens August, Max Emanuel's son. Creation

Vivien is one of the most important pastel painters. From contemporaries praised as "the Van Dyck of pastel ", he was the second ever portraitist who had specialized in pastel painting and had thus royale de peinture et de sculpture obtain authorization for Académie. He received the title Premier peintre the Bavarian Elector Max Emanuel.

As a portraitist of European aristocracy, he worked mostly in Paris and at the Wittelsbach courts in Brussels, Bonn and Munich. In Munich, he lived and worked alongside other court artists in the Herzog -Max - Burg.
