Robert de Cotte

Robert de Cotte (* 1656 in Paris, † July 15, 1735 in Passy, ​​near Paris) was a French architect, master builder and decorator. He is regarded as the most important French architect of the early Rococo.

Life

From 1672 he worked for the French king Louis XIV. During his tenure as architecte ordinaire, 1685-1689 on the side of his brother Jules Hardouin -Mansart ( 1646-1708 ), he was royale d'architecture was added to the Académie in 1687. After studying in Italy, he was court architect in 1689, raised to the peerage in 1702 and followed in 1708, at the age of 52 years, after the death of Hardouin- Mansart this in the Office of the Premier architecte du Roi ( First Architect of the King). In the same year he was raised to the director of the Académie d'architecture.

He completed Hardouin- Mansart's works, including the palace chapel of the castle of Versailles and was involved in almost every major church and palace buildings of its time.

Robert de Cotte died at the age of 79 and was buried in the parish church of Saint -Germain l'Auxerrois.

Work

De Cotte was a very important and famous architect who - although he left Paris rare - all over Europe came to fame and was pulled from many European architects such as by Johann Balthasar Neumann for the Residence in Wuerzburg and Castle Poppelsdorf to rate. He was also a great interior designer. His buildings were praised both for their style and for their equipment.

In 1715 he built in Bonn at the site of the destroyed Wasserburg Poppelsdorf a lock until the construction was discontinued after the death of Joseph Clemens of Bavaria 1723. Also built in 1715 de Cotte on to the begun by Enrico Zuccalli and broken-down construction of the castle residence in Bonn and completed the construction of their own plans.

One of his great and also one of his last works was the Palais Thurn und Taxis (1729-1734) in Frankfurt am Main, for which he supplied the plans. Around the same time came the Archbishop's Palace in Strasbourg (Palais Rohan ).
