Joseph W.S. deGraft-Johnson

Dr. Joseph W.S. deGraft -Johnson ( born October 6, 1933, Cape Coast; † 22 April 1999 in London) was under President Hilla Aeschlimann of 24 September 1979 to 31 December 1981, Vice- President of Ghana.

Career

De Graft- Johnson practiced before his appointment as Vice- President from his job as an engineer and has lectured at the Institute for buildings and streets of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, whose director he was later. He was also a founder and President of the Ghana Institute of Engineers ( ghie ).

Political career

In the time of the military dictatorship of the Supreme Military Council, he stood in opposition to the military regime and therefore was the victim of personal attacks. After the National Redemption Council had lifted the ban on political parties, Joseph de Graft Johnson joined at its inception in 1979 the People's National Party. After the victory of the PNP in the elections in 1979, he became the first Vice- President of Ghana in the government Aeschlimann. On 31 December 1981, the government was overthrown by a coup d'état and DeGraft -Johnson went into exile in London, where he died on 22 April 1999.
