Josephine Wessely

Josephine Wessely ( born March 18, 1860 in Vienna, † August 12 1887 in Carlsbad) was an Austrian actress.

Life

Josephine Wessely drove from 1874 Private studies and attended drama school of the Conservatory of the Friends of Music Society. She debuted on July 1, 1876 as Louise in Love and Intrigue at the Leipzig Stadttheater, where she was employed until 1879, was then, after a stint in Berlin and Vienna, 1879 committed to the Burgtheater in Vienna and in 1884 appointed to the Imperial and Royal Court actress. There she was committed for life, but died August 12, 1887 in Carlsbad, probably from leukemia.

After her death she was buried in the cemetery Hütteldorfer in Vienna. A portrait of her by Eduard Charlemont is located in the Castle Theater Gallery. 1931 Josephine Wessely - way facility in Vienna was named after her. She was the aunt of actress Paula Wessely.

Importance

Josephine Wessely played mainly teen - tragic roles. Great success she had as Gretchen, Marie Beaumarchais in Clavigo and Marianne.
