Josip Murn

Josip Murn (pseudonym: Aleksandrov, born March 4, 1879 in Ljubljana, † June 18, 1901 ibid ) was a Slovenian poet.

Murn attended the secondary school in Ljubljana and was a student member of the opposition fraternity Zadrugo, which also included Ivan Cankar, Oton Župančič and Dragotin chain. Through the mediation of Franja Tavčar, the wife of Ivan Tavčar, he received a scholarship from the Chamber of Commerce, the 1898-99 study enabled at the Business Academy in Vienna him. On his return to Ljubljana, he was already suffering from tuberculosis, he died twenty-two in June 1901.

Murn applies not only to Ivan Cankar, Dragotin chain and Oton Župančič of the founders of modernism in Slovene literature and is the most important after Prešeren and Edvard Kocbek Slovenian poet of the 20th century. The first comprehensive collection of his poems was his friend Ivan Prijatelj under the title Pesmi in romance with an introductory essay out.
