Josip Runjanin

Josif Runjanin (Croatian Josip Runjanin ) ( born December 8, 1821 in Vinkovci, † February 2nd 1878 in Novi Sad, Austria - Hungary ) was a serbischstämmiger lieutenant colonel in the Austro- Hungarian forces. He composed the Croatian national anthem " Lijepa naša domovino " according to the text of the Croatian poet Antun Mihanović and the song " Rado ide Srbin u vojnike " ( German: Gladly the Serb is a soldier ), a Serbian patriotic song.

His father, Ignjatije, and his mother, Sofya came from Kuzmin, Srem. His father was a captain in the Austro- Hungarian forces.

Josif was baptized in the Orthodox Church Silaska Svetog Duha in Vinkovci. On the advice of his father, Josif went to the Military Academy in Glina, where he showed extraordinary musical talent. He was then picked up and carried into the local military band. He began to compose melodies by various popular Italian operas. At the age of 25, he wrote the text for composition of Antun Mihanović " Horvatska Domovina " ( German: Croatian homeland). Subsequently received Runjanins composition entitled " Lijepa naša domovino ", which has since played as a Croatian national anthem.
