JPEG Network Graphics

JPEG Network Graphics ( JNG acronym ) is a subformat of MSG that contains JPEG data.

The JNG file format was originally introduced as a format of the MNG animation format, but can be used for standalone files with the extension be used jng. . Version 1.0 of the specification was published on 31 January 2001. However, it is not a W3C recommendation or ISO standard.

Unlike JPEG, however, JNG can also store a transparency channel (alpha channel), which in turn lossless as 1 -, 2 -, 4 -, 8 -, or 16 - Bittiger PNG data stream to be embedded, or even from a lossy 8-bit JPEG data stream can be made. As for the color information of an 8 - or 12 - Bittiger JPEG data stream can be stored, the latter are lossy course (as well as JPEG) - that is, every time you save go through the compressed image information ( and thus quality ) is lost. It is also possible to store an 8 -bit signal data stream together with a 12 -bit signal, so that decoder, which can not handle the higher quality information (or willing) to have access to the lower order if necessary.

JNG offers some further improvements, such as color and gamma correction, embedded color profiles, checksums for each segment, metadata, etc..

Programs that support the MNG format can also decode the JNG format in the rule. Konqueror for example, provides native MNG / JNG support.

JNG has no registered MIME type, but unofficially is image / x - jng used.
