Multiple -image Network Graphics ( MNG Acronym / mɪŋ /, Eng. Networking graphics with multiple images ) is an open file format for the description of animated graphic files.

MNG is closely related to the PNG image format.

History

As the development of the PNG format began in early 1995, it was decided to install no animation support - not least because this feature of the GIF format was then used much. However, it was soon begun to develop MNG animation as supportive variant of PNG.

Version 1.0 of the MNG specification was published on 31 January 2001. However, MSG is not a W3C recommendation or ISO standard as PNG.

File structure

The structure of the MNG file is basically the same as that of PNG files. They differ only in the slightly different signature ( 8A 4D 4E 47 0D 0A 1A 0A in hexadecimal ) and the use of a far greater variety of units to support all the animation options that provides the format. Images to be used in the animation are stored in the MNG file as encapsulated PNG or JNG images; hence alpha transparency and lossy compression are possible.

Two MNG versions with reduced complexity are also defined: MNG -LC ( ' low complexity ', such as: low complexity ) and MNG - VLC ( ' very low complexity ', such as: very low complexity ). This allows programs to use some features of the MNG standards, and does not implement the full MNG specification.

MNG has so far had no registered MIME type, but video / x - mng can be used.

Support

The developers of the MNG format hope that MNG is starting to replace GIF for animated images on the World Wide Web as it has already done PNG partly for non-animated images. However, this did not happen until today (October 2010 ), since MSG is supported by most web browsers do not ( or no longer ). The websites of major companies rely instead on animations in Adobe Flash, which can substitute its sound transmission and movie formats. Not all browsers like Konqueror support from the MNG format of himself. For Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator and Opera plugins are available.

Apple's Safari is not supported. From the Mozilla Application Suite, the MNG support has been removed in version 1.5a, and all future versions do not seem to support, despite complaints from the community again to include. Netscape Navigator supported MNG in versions 6.0, is 6.01 and 7.0, since these versions building on Mozilla. An unofficial plugin can be used to integrate support in Mozilla Firefox.
