Animated Portable Network Graphics ( APNG, Eng. Moving portable network graphics ) is an extension of the PNG graphics format. It was designed as a simple alternative to MSG format to save as GIF images and animations in only one file format to. APNG to meet the most common requirements for moving images on the Internet according to the information its developers.

Description

The APNG format was presented by the Mozilla developers Stuart Parmenter and Vladimir Vukicevic 2004. In addition to the specification, the two also laid before a patch for Mozilla to the PNG format animations - to expand - including support for alpha channels.

APNG is backwards compatible with PNG. An application program that supports PNG should also be able to represent a APNG animation as a single image. This image can be a single frame of the animation or be included in the file regardless.

Criticism

APNG is contrary to the expressed by the PNG developers fundamental idea of maintaining a clear distinction between image and animation formats. With MNG - VLC (very low complexity ), a pre -specified subset of the full MNG format, there is already an official standard of the MNG group of developers for simple animations.
