Animated Portable Network Graphics ( APNG, Eng. Moving portable network graphics ) is an extension of the PNG graphics format. It was designed as a simple alternative to MSG format to save as GIF images and animations in only one file format to. APNG to meet the most common requirements for moving images on the Internet according to the information its developers.

Description

The APNG format was presented by the Mozilla developers Stuart Parmenter and Vladimir Vukicevic 2004. In addition to the specification, the two also laid before a patch for Mozilla to the PNG format animations - to expand - including support for alpha channels.

APNG is backwards compatible with PNG. An application program that supports PNG should also be able to represent a APNG animation as a single image. This image can be a single frame of the animation or be included in the file regardless.

The following browsers support APNG already:

  • Firefox 3.0
  • Opera version to version 9:50 12:16
  • Opera Mobile from the latest version 10
  • Flock in Version 2.0
  • SeaMonkey version 2.0

Lack support from the other major browser engines Trident (Internet Explorer) and WebKit (Safari, Google Chrome), it is useful to include APNG images in web pages in parallel with their GIF counterparts. This is done with the help of so-called browser switches ( on the server side ( for example, using SSI, CGI or PHP ) or client-side using CSS or JavaScript).

Criticism

APNG is contrary to the expressed by the PNG developers fundamental idea of maintaining a clear distinction between image and animation formats. The PNG development group spoke in April 2007 against the registration of the data blocks APNG as an official extension of the PNG format from; thus remains MNG their official animation format.

With MNG - VLC (very low complexity ), a pre -specified subset of the full MNG format, there is already an official standard of the MNG group of developers for simple animations. From the standpoint of function, scale and complexity of MNG - VLC is comparable to APNG. The developers of the Mozilla Application Suite had left support for the MNG format drop since version 1.5a, despite complaints from the community.
