Jørgen Landt

Jørgen Landt ( * ca 1751 in Vissenbjerg on Funen, Denmark, † June 26, 1804 in Olsker on Bornholm ) was a Danish pastor, botanist and Faroe researchers.

Landt was the son of Jørgen Jørgensen ( Madsen ) ( 1724-56 ), community servant in Vissenberg, and Anna Dorothea Jørgensdatter Landt ( * ca 1732). Early on, he lost his father and was raised by his paternal uncle to the priest in Hesse bearing on Fyn was. From 1777 he was for 14 years a private tutor, partly in Copenhagen, partly in Frederiksborg. His particular interest was in botany.

1791 Jørgen Landt was appointed as pastor to the Faroe Islands, where he was responsible for the community Nordstreymoy. On behalf of the Natural History Society of Denmark, he collected the various kind of the Faroe Islands. He also campaigned for horticulture. He was married since 1792 with the Färingerin Anna ( Anneke ) Hedevig, born Djurhuus (* November 26, 1770 in Nes ( Eysturoy ), † June 9, 1841 in Copenhagen), a daughter of Johan Christian Djurhuus and Maria Rønning.

After seven years, he had to give up his work as a priest in 1798 in the Faroe Islands because he no longer could walk to the communities the difficult mountain paths because of a knee injury.

Back in Denmark worked from his book about the Faroe Islands, over 1800 under the title Forsøg til en Beskrivelse Færøerne ( " attempt a description of the Faroe Islands " ) appeared. The English translation appeared in 1810, and the book should remain the standard work on the geography and nature of the Faroe Islands for many decades.

He relied on the then unreleased recordings by Nicolai Mohr (ca. 1775-78 ) and Jens Christian Svabos Indberetninger fra en rejse til Færø (1781 and 1782 ). Mohr described 25 species of plants, 100 Svabo In Landt 203 more species are added.

1799 Landt parish priest on Bornholm (municipality Olkser and Allinge ), where he died in 1804.
